Word & Character Counter

Count characters, words, lines, sentences and bytes, with estimated reading time.

About the Word & Character Counter

The Word & Character Counter counts characters (with and without spaces), words, sentences, lines and UTF-8 bytes as you type, and estimates reading time — useful for essays, meta descriptions and length-limited fields.

Everything runs in your browser, so your input is never uploaded to a server.

How to use the Word & Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Read the live counts and reading time.
  3. Edit until the text fits your limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why do bytes and characters differ?

In UTF-8, letters outside basic English (accents, other scripts, emoji) use two to four bytes each. Databases and APIs often limit bytes, not characters.

How is reading time estimated?

From the word count at a typical silent reading speed of about 200–250 words per minute.
