About the Slug Generator

The Slug Generator turns a title or phrase into a clean URL slug: lowercase letters and numbers joined by hyphens, with accents removed and symbols dropped. Use it for blog permalinks, product URLs and file names. Paste several titles, one per line, to get one slug for each.

Everything runs in your browser, so your input is never uploaded to a server.

How to use the Slug Generator

  1. Type or paste a title. Use one line per slug if you have several.
  2. Choose a hyphen or an underscore as the separator, and whether the slug should be lowercase.
  3. Copy the slug into your CMS, router or file name.

  • Changing a published slug. Changing the slug of a live page breaks existing links and rankings unless you add a 301 redirect from the old URL.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good URL slug for SEO?

Short, lowercase, readable words separated by hyphens, with no accents, spaces or punctuation. Google treats hyphens as word separators, which is why they are preferred over underscores.

How are accented letters handled?

They are converted to their plain letter, so "Crème Brûlée" becomes "creme-brulee". Characters with no Latin form, such as Chinese or Arabic letters, are dropped.

What happens to "&" and other symbols?

"&" becomes the word "and". Every other symbol is treated as a separator, and repeated separators are merged into one.
