About the Text to Binary

The Text to Binary converter writes text as binary: each character is encoded as UTF-8 and every byte is shown as eight 0s and 1s. Switch direction to turn binary back into readable text. It works with plain English, numbers, accented letters and emoji.

Everything runs in your browser, so your input is never uploaded to a server.

  1. Choose "Text to binary" or "Binary to text".

Common mistakes

  • Binary that is not UTF-8. Decoding arbitrary bytes, such as part of an image, can fail because they are not valid UTF-8 text. This tool is for text, not for files.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert text to binary?

Each character is converted to its UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as eight bits. For example "A" is 65, which is 01000001 in binary.

Why does a letter with an accent give two bytes?

UTF-8 uses one byte for ASCII characters and two to four bytes for everything else. "é" is two bytes, and an emoji is four.

Why do I get "multiple of 8" when decoding?

Binary text is read in groups of 8 bits. A missing or extra digit shifts every byte after it, so the tool asks you to fix the length first.
