About the Image Cropper

The Image Cropper cuts an image down to the part you need. Drag the crop box and its handles, lock a ratio such as 1:1 for avatars, 16:9 for video or 4:5 for portrait posts, or pick a platform size like 1200×630 for Open Graph previews, which also sets the saved size. Exact X, Y, width and height fields let you crop to the pixel. The image never leaves your browser.

Images are processed in your browser with its built-in codecs, so your photos and screenshots are never uploaded.

How to use the Image Cropper

  1. Drop an image onto the box, paste it, or choose a file.
  2. Pick an aspect ratio, or Free, and drag the box and its handles over the part to keep. Arrow keys move the focused box.
  3. Type exact X, Y, width or height values if you need pixel precision, and optionally a width to save at.
  4. Choose the format and click Crop & download.

Common mistakes

  • Cropping too tightly for social previews. Some apps trim link previews further or overlay text on them. Leave a margin around faces and titles in a 1200×630 image.
  • Saving a small crop at a large width. Enlarging a 300 px crop to 1200 px cannot add detail, so it looks soft. Crop a larger area, or start from a higher-resolution original.
  • Re-saving JPEGs repeatedly. Each JPEG save loses a little detail. Crop from the original file, or save an intermediate copy as PNG.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop an image to a square?

Choose the 1:1 ratio. The box becomes a square centred on the current area; drag it over the face or object to keep and resize it from a corner. To save at a fixed size such as 400×400, enter 400 in Save at width.

Does cropping reduce quality?

Cropping itself keeps every pixel inside the box at full quality. The saved file is re-encoded, so for JPEG and WebP choose a quality of 90 or more if you plan to edit it again, or PNG for a lossless copy.

What do the platform sizes do?

Open Graph 1200×630 and YouTube 1280×720 lock the box to that shape and fill in the saved width, so the download has exactly that size however large the crop area is.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is read, cropped and encoded by your browser, and the result is saved straight to your device. EXIF metadata such as GPS location is dropped from the saved file.
