About the Background Remover

The Background Remover cuts the person, product or animal out of a photo with an AI model that runs in your browser, so it is free, has no watermark and needs no account. The cut-out keeps the full resolution of your original, not a small preview, and you can drop in dozens of photos at once. Save it as a transparent PNG, put it on white for ID photos and product listings, or on any colour you like.

Images are processed in your browser with its built-in codecs, so your photos and screenshots are never uploaded.

How to use the Background Remover

  1. Drop one or more photos onto the box, paste them, or choose files. The first time, the AI model downloads once: 44 MB, or 115 MB for the high-quality model on graphics cards that support it.
  2. Wait a moment while each background is removed; the preview shows the result on a checkerboard, and the slider compares it with the original.
  3. Choose the background (transparent, white or a colour), the format and, if you like, Crop to subject to trim the empty space.
  4. If some background is left over (often a shadow on the wall) or a part is missing, click Touch up edges and paint over it with the Erase or Restore brush.
  5. Click Download for one image, or Download all (ZIP) for the whole batch.

Common mistakes

  • Saving a transparent cut-out as JPG. JPG has no transparency, so the background becomes white. Choose PNG or WebP to keep the background transparent.
  • Expecting a transparent PNG to be small. PNG is lossless, so a full-resolution cut-out of a large photo can be several megabytes. For the web, choose WebP, or run the result through the Image Compressor.
  • Low-contrast photos and shadows. A subject in clothes the same colour as the wall behind it, or a shadow on that wall, is hard for any model and may be kept as part of the subject. Erase it with Touch up edges, or use a photo with more contrast or softer light.

Works well with the Background Remover

  • Image Cropper: crop the cut-out to a square or a passport ratio.
  • Image Resizer: resize product photos to the size a marketplace asks for.
  • Image Compressor: compress the result to 50 KB or 100 KB for an upload form.

Frequently asked questions

Is this background remover really free?

Yes. There are no credits, no sign-up and no watermark, and full-resolution downloads are not locked behind a plan. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server cost to pass on.

Do I get the image in HD or full quality?

Yes. The model finds the subject on a smaller copy, and the mask it produces is scaled up and applied to every pixel of your original. A 4000 × 3000 photo comes back as a 4000 × 3000 cut-out (PNG keeps every pixel unchanged).

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your images are read, processed and saved by your browser. Only the AI model itself is downloaded, from the Hugging Face Hub; your photos never leave your device.

Can I remove the background from many images at once?

Yes. Add as many photos as you like; they are processed one after another and you can download them together as a ZIP. With the high-quality model on a graphics card it is much faster; on the processor alone, expect several seconds per photo.

Why does it use a different model on some computers?

On graphics cards that can run it (through WebGPU in Chrome, Edge and other browsers) the tool uses BiRefNet, a larger model with cleaner edges that also removes shadows on the wall behind the subject. BiRefNet needs more of the graphics card than many cards allow browsers to use, so phones and most computers get ormbg, a smaller model that runs on the processor; its results can be touched up with the Erase and Restore brushes. The status line above the preview shows which model is running.

How do I make a white background for a passport or product photo?

Choose White as the background and JPG or PNG as the format. Check the official size and head position rules for passport photos separately; the Image Resizer and Image Cropper can bring the result to the exact pixel size.

Which photos work best?

People, products, animals and other clear subjects in front of a distinct background. Fine hair and soft edges are kept as partial transparency. Shadows on a wall in the same colour as the clothes, very busy scenes, glass and several overlapping objects are harder; use the comparison slider to check the edges, and Touch up edges to erase anything left over.
