About the XML Sitemap Generator

The XML Sitemap Generator turns a list of URLs or paths into a valid sitemap.xml. It resolves paths against your site address, removes duplicates and #fragments, escapes characters such as & and encodes spaces, and splits lists over 50,000 URLs into numbered sitemaps with a sitemap index, as the protocol requires.

Files and tags are generated in your browser; nothing you enter, including unpublished URLs and titles, is sent to a server.

How to use the XML Sitemap Generator

  1. Enter your site address, then paste one URL or path per line (or import an existing sitemap or a crawler export).
  2. Optionally add a lastmod date; leave changefreq and priority out unless another search engine needs them.
  3. Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site root and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Common mistakes

  • Listing URLs that redirect. Sitemaps should list final URLs. Including http:// or non-www versions that redirect wastes crawl budget and sends mixed signals about the canonical address.
  • Setting every lastmod to today. If every URL always shows today's date, search engines learn the field is meaningless and stop using it. Only change lastmod when the content really changes.
  • Forgetting to update the sitemap. A sitemap generated once goes stale as pages are added. On a CMS or framework, generate it automatically on each deploy.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google use changefreq and priority?

No. Google ignores both and reads lastmod only when it is consistently accurate. Bing also uses lastmod. Leaving changefreq and priority out keeps the file smaller and honest.

Which pages belong in a sitemap?

Only canonical, indexable pages that return 200: no redirects, no noindex pages, no URLs blocked by robots.txt and no duplicate variants with tracking parameters.

How many URLs can a sitemap hold?

50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites use several sitemaps listed in a sitemap index file; this tool splits them automatically.
