About the UTM Builder
The UTM Builder adds utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and the optional term, content and id parameters to a link so Google Analytics can attribute visits to a campaign. It keeps existing query parameters and #fragments in the right place, normalises case and spaces, builds links for many pages at once, decodes existing links, and estimates which GA4 default channel the visits will land in.
Files and tags are generated in your browser; nothing you enter, including unpublished URLs and titles, is sent to a server.
How to use the UTM Builder
- Enter the page URL, or switch to Many links and paste a list of pages.
- Pick a preset such as Newsletter or Google Ads, or type the source, medium and campaign yourself.
- Check the GA4 channel estimate and the warnings, then copy the link or download the CSV.
Common mistakes
- Inventing new mediums. GA4 sorts traffic into channels by medium. Values such as "fb-post" or "promo" land in Unassigned; use cpc, email, social, referral, affiliate or display.
- Tagging internal links. UTM links between your own pages restart the session and erase the real source. Tag only links from outside the site.
- Long, inconsistent campaign names. Agree a naming pattern (for example 2026-11_black-friday) and reuse it, so reports group correctly.
Works well with the UTM Builder
- QR Code Generator: print the tagged link as a QR code.
- URL Parser: inspect every part of a long URL.
- URL Encode / Decode: encode special characters in values.
Frequently asked questions
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats "Facebook" and "facebook" as different sources. Keep "Lowercase everything" on so every link in a campaign is consistent.
Should I use UTM links on my own site?
No. UTM parameters on internal links start a new session and overwrite the real source of the visit. Use them only on links from outside your site: ads, emails, social posts and QR codes.
Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source is required for GA4 to use any of them. Always add utm_medium and utm_campaign too; utm_term, utm_content and utm_id are optional.
