About the Passport Photo Maker

The Passport Photo Maker turns a phone photo into a passport or visa photo of the right size: US and India visa 2 × 2 inch, UK, Schengen and Australian 35 × 45 mm, the 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport-size photo Indian forms ask for, Canada 50 × 70 mm and China 33 × 48 mm. An AI model replaces the background with plain white or light grey, guide lines show where the top of the head and the chin must be, and you download a JPG for online forms (under a KB limit if the form has one) or a 4 × 6 inch, A4 or Letter sheet to print. The photo never leaves your device.

Images are processed in your browser with its built-in codecs, so your photos and screenshots are never uploaded.

How to use the Passport Photo Maker

  1. Pick the document. The size, head height and background rule for it appear under the menu, with a link to the official page.
  2. Choose a photo taken face-on in even light, with your shoulders in the shot. The background is replaced with white (or the colour the document asks for); the AI model downloads once, 44 MB.
  3. Check the fit: the top of the head should touch the red line and the chin sit inside the green band. Drag the photo, use the zoom and straighten sliders, or press Auto-fit head.
  4. For an online form, set the maximum file size in KB if it has one and download the JPG.
  5. To print, choose 4 × 6 in for a photo lab or A4 / Letter for a home printer, then download the sheet as PDF or JPG and print it at 100% (“Actual size”).

Passport and visa photo sizes

The sizes the tool uses, measured on the printed photo. Head size is from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair.

Common mistakes

  • Printing with “Fit to page”. Printers shrink the sheet to fit their margins, so every photo comes out a few millimetres too small. Print the PDF at 100% (“Actual size”) and measure one photo before cutting.
  • Measuring the head to the hairline. Head size runs from the chin to the top of the hair. Lining the red guide up with the forehead makes the head too big.
  • Shadows and uneven light. A new background cannot fix a shadow across the face or a bright window behind you. Face a window or a lamp so the light falls evenly.
  • Uploading a cropped photo where the form crops it. GOV.UK’s online passport application wants the uncropped original and crops it for you; Canada’s online renewal wants the file straight from the camera. Read the digital rules in the table.

Works well with the Passport Photo Maker

  • Background Remover: remove the background from other photos, such as product shots, in bulk.
  • Image Compressor: shrink a signature or document scan to the KB limit of the same form.
  • JPG & PNG to PDF: put a photo and scanned documents into one PDF for an application.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country. US passports and visas and Indian visas use 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The UK, the Schengen countries and Australia use 35 × 45 mm, which is also the 3.5 × 4.5 cm “passport size” most Indian exam and job forms ask for. Canadian passports use 50 × 70 mm and Chinese visas 33 × 48 mm. The size table on this page lists the head size and background for each.

How many passport photos fit on a 4 × 6 print?

Six 2 × 2 inch photos, eight 35 × 45 mm photos, or four Canadian 50 × 70 mm photos. Download the 4 × 6 sheet as a JPG and order a normal 4 × 6 (10 × 15 cm) print at a photo shop or kiosk, then cut along the grey lines.

How do I print passport photos at home at the right size?

Download the A4 or Letter sheet as a PDF and print it with the scale set to 100% or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”. Measure one photo with a ruler before you cut: a 35 × 45 mm photo should be exactly 3.5 cm wide. Use photo paper for the best result.

Can I make a passport photo with a white background on my phone?

Yes. Open the tool in your phone’s browser, take or choose a photo against any plain wall, and the AI model replaces the background with white. It runs on the phone itself, so it can take a few seconds the first time.

How do I make my photo smaller than 50 KB or 240 KB for an online form?

Set the maximum file size before you download the JPG. The tool keeps the pixel size the form asks for and lowers the JPEG quality just enough to fit. US visa (DS-160) and India visa limits are filled in when you choose those documents.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is processed in your browser. Only the AI model is downloaded (from the Hugging Face Hub, once); your photo never leaves your device.

Will my photo be accepted?

The tool takes care of the size, the head position and the background. Officials also check things no tool can fix: a neutral expression, eyes open and visible, no shadows or glare, a recent photo, and no glasses where they are banned (US passports and visas, India e-Visa). Some offices, such as the Australian Passport Office, ask for prints from a photo lab, and Canada’s online renewal needs the file straight from the camera.

Where do I measure the head size?

From the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair (the crown), not to the hairline. That is why the red guide sits at the top of the hair. If your hair is very full, keep the chin in the upper part of the green band.
