About the Broken Link Checker

The Broken Link Checker finds dead links on a web page. It reads every link (and, if you want, every image) in the page's HTML, then checks each unique URL from our server: 404 and 410 pages, 5xx server errors, DNS failures, timeouts, SSL errors and redirect loops are reported as broken, and redirected links show where they end up. Internal links come first, because they are the ones you can fix.

Our server requests the URLs you enter, like a crawler: it reads the response without running the page's scripts, and the analysis runs in your browser. The URLs and results are not stored.

How to use the Broken Link Checker

  1. Enter the page URL; switch off external links to check only your own site, or switch on images to include them.
  2. Press Find broken links and watch the results arrive in batches.
  3. Filter by Broken, update or remove each link (the anchor text shows where it is on the page), and point redirected internal links at their final URL.
  4. Download the CSV to keep a record or hand it to whoever edits the page.

Frequently asked questions

Do broken links hurt SEO?

A few broken outbound links will not sink a page, but they send visitors to dead ends and waste crawl time. Broken internal links are worse: the page they should point to loses that link, and crawlers may not find it at all.

Why is a link reported as 403 or 429 when it works in my browser?

Some servers refuse automated requests or rate-limit them. The checker tries GET when HEAD fails, but a firewall can still block it. Open the link yourself before removing it.

Can it crawl my whole site?

It checks one page at a time, up to 300 unique links. Run it on your most important pages: the home page, navigation, top landing pages and pages with many outbound links.
