About the Sitemap Validator

The Sitemap Validator audits an XML sitemap or sitemap index. It finds the sitemap from robots.txt or /sitemap.xml, follows the index to its child sitemaps (gzipped files included), and checks it against the sitemaps.org protocol and Google's guidance: valid XML, absolute URLs, the 50,000-URL limit, duplicates, other hosts, http:// URLs on HTTPS sites, lastmod format and future dates, and URLs blocked by robots.txt. Then it checks whether the first 200 listed URLs really answer 200, without redirects or noindex.

Our server requests the URLs you enter, like a crawler: it reads the response without running the page's scripts, and the analysis runs in your browser. The URLs and results are not stored.

How to use the Sitemap Validator

  1. Enter a sitemap URL, or just your site address.
  2. Fix the failed checks first: an unreadable or invalid sitemap is ignored entirely.
  3. Press Check URLs to find 404s, redirects and noindex pages among the listed URLs.
  4. Remove or replace those URLs, then resubmit the sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Frequently asked questions

Should a sitemap list redirected URLs?

No. List the final URL of every page. Redirects, 404s and noindex pages in a sitemap send mixed signals and show up as errors or warnings in Search Console.

How big can a sitemap be?

Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file. Larger sites split their URLs over several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index.

Do changefreq and priority matter?

Google ignores both. It uses lastmod when the dates are consistently accurate, so set lastmod to when the content really changed, not to the build time.
