About the PDF to Word

PDF to Word turns a PDF back into an editable .docx. Lines are joined into paragraphs, larger text becomes Word headings, bold and italic words keep their style, bullets become list items and pictures are placed where they appear. Scanned pages have no text to copy, so they are read with OCR, or kept as page images if you prefer. Everything runs in your browser.

The PDF is read and the Word file is built in your browser; the file is never uploaded. OCR for scanned pages also runs on your device, after downloading its language data once.

How to use the PDF to Word

  1. Drop a PDF onto the box or choose a file.
  2. Choose what happens to scanned pages: read their text with OCR, or keep them as images.
  3. Pick the language of the text if OCR is used, and whether to include pictures.
  4. Click Convert to Word and download the .docx.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting tables to come back as Word tables. A PDF only stores text at positions, so table cells come out separated by tabs. Select the lines in Word and use Insert › Table › Convert Text to Table.
  • Converting a scanned PDF without OCR. With "Keep as images", scanned pages stay pictures you cannot edit. Choose "Read text (OCR)" and the right language.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened with PDF.js in your browser and the Word file is built on your device. OCR also runs locally; only its language data is downloaded once and then cached.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

Yes. Pages with no selectable text are read with OCR (English, Hindi and 20 more languages) and become editable paragraphs. OCR reads up to 50 scanned pages per file; later pages are kept as images.

Why does Hindi text come out garbled, and how do I fix it?

Many PDFs store Hindi as shaped glyphs without a correct text mapping, so the copied letters come out in the wrong order. Turn on "Read every page with OCR" and choose Hindi: the pages are then read from how they look, not from the broken text layer.

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

The text, headings, lists and pictures come through, but a PDF has no real paragraphs or tables, only positioned text. Tables become lines with tabs, and two-column pages become one column after the other. Fonts are set to Word's defaults so the text is easy to edit.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then convert the unlocked file.
