About the Word to PDF

Word to PDF converts .docx files to PDF without Word or an upload. The page size and margins, headings, bold and italic text, underline, colours, bullet and numbered lists, tables with merged cells and pictures are laid out page by page in your browser. Hindi (Devanagari) text and the ₹ sign are supported. Several files can be converted at once.

The Word file is read and the PDF is drawn in your browser; the file is never uploaded. Only the Hindi font is downloaded from Devtoolry when the document needs it.

How to use the Word to PDF

  1. Drop one or more .docx files onto the box, or choose them.
  2. Click Convert to PDF.
  3. Read any notes (for example about headers or unsupported characters).
  4. Download each PDF, or all of them as a ZIP.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading .doc instead of .docx. The old binary .doc format is not supported. Save as .docx first.
  • Relying on headers and footers. Page headers, footers and page numbers are not drawn. Add page numbers to the PDF afterwards with Add Page Numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Word file uploaded?

No. The .docx is unzipped and read in your browser, and the PDF is drawn on your device with pdf-lib. Only the Hindi font is downloaded from Devtoolry when a document contains Devanagari text or ₹.

Why do line breaks differ slightly from Word?

Word's own fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Arial) are not available in the browser, so text is set in the closest standard PDF font: Helvetica, Times or Courier. Words are a little wider or narrower, so a line can wrap one word earlier or later.

Can I convert an old .doc file?

No, only .docx (Word 2007 and later). Open the .doc in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then convert that file.

What is not converted?

Headers and footers, footnotes, text boxes and shapes, charts, and fonts beyond Latin and Devanagari. You get a note when a document uses them. For a pixel-perfect copy of a complex layout, use Word's File › Save as PDF.
